Open Spaces specialises in bushwalking, cycling, rockclimbing and XC skiing titles. We have had many opportunities to grow our business by branching out into more general sporting subjects but we are not interested in creating or stocking titles that we are not passionate about. This means that we only create, publish and stock what we believe are the very best titles available in their field.
Open Spaces creates and distributes books from our offices in Moonee Ponds, Victoria. We consciously run our business along niche lines and pride ourselves on the fact that we are both streamlined and professional. Our staff are keen walkers, climbers, skiers and cyclists.
We also run our offices in an environmentally friendly manner. We generate about 65% of all of our electricity with the use of BP solar panels on the roof. The system is grid connected (using ‘green’ energy from Origin Energy) and we also utilise battery backup, which means that our computers, hub, printers etc do not suffer from energy fluctuations or blackouts. Our offices are not connected to mains water and instead use only tank water. The toilets are flushed using grey water (recycled from our sinks and showers). Our windows are all double-glazed and the walls specially insulated against the weather. This means our heating and cooling costs are kept to a minimum. Lighting is all based around compact fluorescent and LED technology. We are striving to reduce our eco-footprint and are on track to become a fully carbon neutral publishing business within the next 6 months. If you would like to see our office / house then please check out Greenlivingpedia.
Unlike most publishing houses Open Spaces pay our authors on an ongoing royalty system. This means that our authors earn more money over the life of their title and we in return enjoy strong ongoing relationships with them. Our aim is to work closely with authors and creative content providers to provide the highest quality books within our marketplace – something that a royalty system helps towards. Our ongoing commitment to our authors and to our titles mean that our books will not be found in remainder stores.
